Shopify Delivery Route Optimization: Turn Orders Into Optimized Courier Routes
EfiRoute now connects directly to Shopify: every order becomes a delivery stop, automatically geocoded and dropped into an optimized courier route — with the customer's address, phone, item weights and payment method carried across. New orders can sync in real time over webhooks. For local delivery teams, EfiRoute pairs the Google Cloud optimization engine with a courier app, live tracking and proof of delivery — starting free, $15/month Pro, with no per-driver fees.
If you sell on Shopify and deliver locally yourself — a grocery shop, a florist, a bakery, a furniture store — the orders are the easy part. The hard part is turning a growing list of addresses into a sensible driving order for one or more couriers, every single day, without spending the morning copying addresses into a map. This guide shows how connecting Shopify to EfiRoute automates that whole step: orders flow in, and optimized routes come out.
What does connecting Shopify to route optimization do?
The EfiRoute Shopify integration pulls your orders straight out of the store and turns each one into a delivery stop — no CSV exports, no re-typing. EfiRoute geocodes the shipping address to exact coordinates, carries across the customer name, phone, items, weights and payment method, then feeds the whole day's stops into its optimization engine. The result is a balanced, fastest-first route for every courier, pushed to a mobile app with turn-by-turn navigation, live tracking and proof of delivery.
In other words, Shopify handles the storefront and checkout; EfiRoute handles everything that happens between "order paid" and "delivered at the door". The two stay in sync automatically, so your dispatcher stops being a copy-paste machine and your couriers stop backtracking across town.
How to connect Shopify to EfiRoute
Setup takes a few minutes and uses a Shopify custom app — no App Store install, no coding. You do it once per store:
- Create a custom app in Shopify. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Apps and sales channels → Develop apps → Create an app. Name it "EfiRoute".
- Grant the read_orders scope. Under Admin API integration, enable the read_orders scope, then install the app on your store.
- Copy the Admin API access token. Shopify shows an access token that starts with shpat_… — copy it once (it is shown a single time).
- Connect the store in EfiRoute. In EfiRoute go to Integrations → Connect store → Shopify, paste your store domain (yourshop.myshopify.com) and the token, then Test & connect.
- Optional: enable real-time sync. Paste the app's API secret key to let EfiRoute register order webhooks. Leave it blank and EfiRoute simply pulls new orders on a schedule instead.
- Choose where orders land. Send all orders to one standing "inbox" project, or auto-create a project per day, and pick which fulfillment statuses to import (usually unfulfilled).
That's it — from the next order onward, stops appear in EfiRoute ready to optimize. You can pause, resume or remove the connection any time from the Integrations page.
What syncs from each Shopify order
EfiRoute normalizes every order into exactly what a delivery stop needs — nothing store-specific leaks into your routes:
| From Shopify | How EfiRoute uses it |
|---|---|
| Shipping address | Geocoded to precise coordinates so routing is accurate, not "close enough". |
| Customer name & phone | Shown to the courier and used for live tracking links and delivery notifications. |
| Line items | Matched to your product catalog; missing products are created automatically. |
| Item weights (grams) | Become load demands so capacity-aware optimization never overloads a courier. |
| Payment status | Cash-on-delivery becomes a collect-at-door amount; paid orders are marked prepaid. |
| Order note | Delivery instructions are passed straight through to the courier at the stop. |
Real-time sync vs. scheduled pulls
With the API secret key added, EfiRoute registers orders/create and orders/updated webhooks on your store, so a new Shopify order shows up as a delivery stop within seconds — no manual export, no waiting for a batch. Every webhook is verified with an HMAC signature, so only genuine calls from your store are trusted.
If you'd rather not share the secret key, EfiRoute polls your store on a schedule and imports new and updated orders automatically. Either way, an idempotency guard means the same order can never land twice, even if it's updated several times before it ships.
Why route optimization matters for Shopify delivery
Deciding the best order to visit even 20 stops is a version of the "vehicle routing problem" — the number of possible orderings explodes far faster than a human or a spreadsheet can handle. EfiRoute delegates it to the Google Cloud Route Optimization API, the same fleet-grade solver behind enterprise logistics, so a Shopify merchant gets enterprise-quality routes without the enterprise price tag. For a delivery business, a few percent less driving per route compounds into earlier finishes, lower fuel bills and more drops per day.
Who this is for
Any Shopify merchant that does its own local delivery benefits, but a few fit especially well:
- Grocery, farm boxes & specialty food. Recurring local orders with tight windows — real-time sync means the day's box list is always current when you plan routes.
- Florists & gift shops. Same-day delivery with exact addresses and delivery notes ("leave with neighbour") carried straight to the courier.
- Bakeries & meal prep. Early-morning drops where a balanced, fastest-first route per driver gets everything delivered fresh and on time.
- Furniture & bulky goods. Item weights from Shopify feed capacity-aware routing so no van is planned beyond what it can actually carry.
Where EfiRoute fits
EfiRoute is route optimization software built for small and mid-size delivery teams. Beyond the Shopify link, it imports from WooCommerce and Trendyol, accepts Excel/CSV uploads with automatic geocoding, and gives couriers an iOS/Android app with navigation, live GPS tracking, photo proof of delivery, customer tracking links and cash collection per stop.
Pricing is the differentiator: no per-driver fees. It starts free, the Pro plan is $15/month and Business is $49/month (25 couriers, 1,000 stops per project); each optimization run costs $1 per courier with $15 of monthly credits applied first. See the full EfiRoute pricing, or read our courier route optimization guide for how the whole delivery workflow fits together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect Shopify to a route planner?
Yes. EfiRoute connects to Shopify with a custom app Admin API token and turns every order into an optimized delivery stop automatically. You paste your store domain and token once, and orders flow in — either in real time over webhooks or on a schedule.
How do Shopify orders become delivery routes?
EfiRoute reads each order's shipping address, geocodes it to exact coordinates, and adds it as a stop in your chosen project. When you optimize, the Google Cloud engine sequences all the stops into balanced, fastest-first routes for your couriers and pushes each route to the driver app with navigation, tracking and proof of delivery.
Do I have to export orders manually?
No. With the app's API secret key added, EfiRoute registers order webhooks and new orders appear as stops within seconds. Without it, EfiRoute pulls new and updated orders from your store on a schedule. There is no CSV export step either way.
Does it handle cash on delivery?
Yes. If a Shopify order uses a cash-on-delivery gateway, EfiRoute marks it as a collect-at-door amount so the courier records the payment at the stop. Orders already paid online are marked prepaid, so no money is collected at the door.
Which Shopify plan do I need?
Any Shopify plan that lets you create a custom app in Settings → Apps and sales channels → Develop apps — which is all standard Shopify plans. You only need the read_orders permission; EfiRoute never writes to your store.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. EfiRoute has a permanent free plan to test the workflow, then Pro at $15/month and Business at $49/month, plus $1 per courier per optimization run with $15 of monthly credits applied first — so a small team planning a few times a week often pays around $20–30/month.
